Self-care is vital to managing not only stress but our physical and mental health.

What is stress?

The simplest definition of stress is the body’s response to pressures from a life situation or event. The factors that contribute to stress can vary vastly from person to person and our reactions can be extremely different. When we experience stress our body produces stress hormones that trigger a flight, fight or freeze response. Sometimes referred to as the F3, these are our body’s survival techniques for responding to danger. It is a physiological reaction that occurs when our body perceives danger or a threat to our survival.

We often hear the phrase ‘I feel so burnt out’, which refers to a lack of energy and lack of motivation. Burnout is defined as a state of mental, emotional and physical exhaustion caused by continuous or repeated stress. According to the World Health Organisation, burnout has now been classified as an official diagnosis.

Burnout was originally considered to be associated with work, but research has shown that burnout can be experienced by many people in diverse circumstances. Peoplein caring positions, such as psychologists, counselors, doctors, parents and childrenlooking after their aged parents are all known to experience burnout. People in high-pressure positions, such as CEOs, managers, farmers, elite athletes or people undertime constraints experience burn out. In fact, all ongoing pressured situations produceburnout. We can all experience burnout.

Research has shown that burnout can have serious consequences on our work, our relationships and our enjoyment of life and has been associated with other mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.

Statistics

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australians are more stressed than ever! A recent study found that 74 per cent of people felt overwhelmed or unable to cope as a result of feeling stressed. The results of a recent poll that asked people about their stress levels shows the impact of stress on physical and mental health:

  • 75% admitted that stress adversely affected their physical health

  • 64% admitted that stress affected their mental health

  • 51% of adults who felt stressed reported feeling depressed

  • 61% reported feeling anxious

  • 16% had self-harmed

  • 32% said they had suicidal thoughts and feelings

These statistics paint a worrying picture, demonstrating just how much stress affects our physical and mental wellbeing.
