Life is like a roller coaster. Full of highs and lows, twists and turns, and at times, we can feel out of control.

Experiencing tough times is part of life. Be it an injury, a loss, a break-up or a failure of some kind, setbacks can knock us for six.

Feeling fearful, angry and regretful are normal emotions. When presented with an unexpected or disappointing situation, we have a tendency to react adversely and only see the negatives. It’s human nature.

You can either choose to give up with a victim mentality or you can accept whatever is thrown at you and turn these setbacks into opportunities.

Learning how to manage and regulate your emotions in a healthy way builds resilience and gives you the coping skills to deal with any future setbacks.

Step #1 – Accept the situation

This is usually the hardest step.

Accepting the situation for what it is (and acknowledging it cannot be changed) takes humility and determination.

Beating yourself up with “what if’s” is a waste of time and energy.

Trust in yourself and believe you have what it takes to get through the situation.

How can you move forward in the best possible way? 

Step #2 – Learn from the situation

Once the acceptance phase has passed, you need to ask yourself:

What can you learn from this situation?

 In sports injury, the following questions may be helpful:

  • How did the injury happen?
  • Was I doing the appropriate amount of training?
  • How can I become mentally and physically stronger?
  • What do I need to do to ensure this doesn’t occur again?
  • How do I become a better person from this?

Use challenges to your advantage – they could open new doors which may have previously been closed.

These “roadblocks” are an opportunity to learn and grow. It helps us build resilience and progress forward in life.

Step #3 – Set goals

Now you have learnt from the situation, how can you move forward from it?

The first and foremost step is to write down your goals and aspirations.

What do you want out of your personal life? Career? Future?

And what can you do to achieve these goals?

Having a clear plan is essential. Holding yourself accountable is also important.

Telling people about your goals is a sure-fire way to ensure you follow through.

Make your dreams a reality

Setbacks are a part of life.

Don’t let these challenges hold you back and stop you from creating the life you want.
